A unique wooden egg bird observatory

A unique wooden egg intended as a bird observatory is almost finished. The 14 by 9 meter egg is a bird-watching hide where visitors experience the Haringvliet up close and in a different way in a very special place in nature. The main construction of the egg consists of unprocessed wood. The egg lies on its side outside the dike. Visitors can walk to the island via a sheltered path.

The lower part of the egg is made of Accoya® wooden beams. This part of the egg can be flooded due to, for example, tidal changes. The Accoya® wooden beams have a length ranging from 1.70 meters to 2 meters and are 120 mm wide and 27 to 30 centimeters high. The part of the egg that remains above water is made from spruce.

Very special is the connection between the beams of the egg. For this purpose, dowels have been used. A dowel connection consists of wooden pins that connect the beams in an invisible manner. The dimensions of the dowels range from 40 mm to 40 cm; depending on the connection to be made. In total, thousands of dowels have been used. The dowels are made of spruce wood that expands with moisture, making the construction even more solid. In addition to the dowels, glue and wood-bearing bolts are also used for the connection.

The egg has a floor on the ground floor and a storey floor of wood with a concrete layer at a height of 2.5 meters. From this altitude visitors can spot the many birds. On top of the egg comes a cane covering.

RO & AD architects and Rau Architects sign for the design of the egg. The first mentioned desk has a lot of experience with Accoya® wood. The agency designed several elements in the Brabant water line, such as the Mozesbrug and Ravelijnbrug. Ad Kil, co-owner of Ro & Ad: “We always choose Accoya® because we are big fans of the wood. Accoya® is made of a fast-growing type of wood and also has durability class 1. The untreated Accoya® wood can be used outdoors without any problems. And the wood looks nice of course.”
