A Joint Venture For Collaborative Excellence
Accoya USA, LLC is a joint venture between Accsys and Eastman, taking advantage and benefitting from synergies between the two businesses’ respective strengths.
Sustainable wood specialist Accsys plc (London, U.K.) and Eastman (Kingsport, Tenn.) have formed a joint venture company, Accoya USA LLC. The joint venture is constructing and operating an Accoya wood production plant to serve the North American market. As the US seeks more sustainable building materials, there is a burgeoning market for high performance wood.
Eastman is a world leader in chemical engineering and processes, the world’s largest producer of acetic anhydride, and has extensive experience in project leadership for plant design and construction.
Accsys is the only producer of acetylated wood in the world, with years of proven success in the manufacturing, marketing and sales of the sustainable, ultra high-performance building material.
Addressing Opportunity in North America
Green Light for Growth
Accoya wood has been consistently growing in popularity globally, with its unmatched combination of high performance characteristics, long-life durability in all conditions, and exceptional sustainability credentials including Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold certification.
Currently Accsys has a capacity of ~80,000m3 of Accoya per year at its existing site in Arnhem, the Netherlands since the completion of a fourth acetylation reactor there. The Accoya USA facility will initially have an annual production capacity of ~43,000m3 (~18 million board feet) provided through two acetylation reactors, replicating Accsys’ proven-successful design, technology and processes at their Arnhem site.
Designed to Succeed
Accoya USA Production Plant
Located in Kingsport, TN
The plant will replicate the successful design and technology of Accsys Technologies’ production facility in the Netherlands. We are anticipating the first Accoya ‘made in the USA’ to be ready for the market in 2024. It is being built at Eastman’s Kingsport, Tennessee site, with Eastman providing the acetic anhydride required for the wood acetylation process from its adjacent facility.
Supporting Our Local Community
Sustainability for All
Our goal is to be a good corporate citizen, in both our local areas of operation and throughout North America where Accoya is sold. We are a responsible employer for local and remote staff, and we support sustainable, healthy and socially-responsible activities.
We engage with projects and activities that promote and demonstrate the value of a more sustainable approach to life, and especially the built environment. We focus on supporting the circular economy bio-cycle agenda, the use of sustainable materials, and promotion of engineering, architecture, building and manufacturing.
Currently, we are looking to support Eastman on a new amphitheater project at one of Kingsport’s most iconic attractions, Bays Mountain Park. It will be built in a central location of the park near the Nature Center and feature lower levels with restrooms and changing rooms, outdoor seating for 341 people and ADA parking. We are also assessing charity support activities and engaging with colleagues to choose and nominate several initiatives to focus on.
Brad Lich, Eastman Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer
“We’re pleased to partner with Accsys and excited to achieve this very important milestone. Eastman is committed to becoming a leading sustainable materials company, and Accoya’s value proposition as a sustainable building material is compelling. The great collaboration between our teams brings a wealth of complementary experience and knowledge together, and positions Accoya USA, LLC very well to benefit from the synergy between our acetyls business and the Accoya production process. We look forward to progressing the Accoya USA story and delivering on the great potential in the North American market.”
Rob Harris, Chief Executive of Accsys
“We are delighted to formally start creating an American home for Accoya production, and increasing our global supply to meet the world’s strong demand for a more sustainable, high-performance building material. This venture will allow Accsys to build its base in North America, where our products have huge potential for market growth.’
