Lake Burton

A Retreat with Timeless Performance

A Retreat with Timeless Performance

Set against the serene backdrop of Lake Burton in the North Georgia mountains, this recently completed residence is a true showcase of thoughtful design, sustainable materials, and exceptional craftsmanship. The home—and its complementary boat dock—feature Accoya wood siding and soffits, chosen for its durability, dimensional stability, and minimal maintenance needs.

Manufactured by TimberTown, the Accoya Color Grey used in this project brings a refined, yet natural aesthetic to the structure’s exterior while ensuring long-lasting performance, even in the region’s fluctuating climate.

Inspiration that Led to Innovation

For designer Nikie Barfield, the search for the right material began with a powerful visual.

“The inspiration for the material actually came from another Accoya project called the Six Square House. I remember seeing it in a publication, thinking it was one of the most unique and beautiful houses I had ever seen. I shared it with my business partner, Whitney Wolf, who is a carpenter, and he explored the material.

When it was time to build our client’s home, their major directive for the exterior was that it be high-performing, low to no maintenance. So, we set out to find something that was not only beautiful but met their criteria as well. Accoya checked all of the boxes! With our vision and our client’s directive aligned, and of course with a talented architect and build team, we ended up with a striking Accoya clad home.”

Built to Endure

Built to Endure

This home is more than just a beautiful addition to Lake Burton—it’s a case study in sustainable, low-maintenance building. Accoya wood, modified through a non-toxic acetylation process, resists rot, insects, and warping, making it ideal for lakeside environments.

By combining cutting-edge material science with a clear architectural vision, the team—residential designer Lew Oliver Inc., builder McKinney Builders, and designer Nikie Barfield —delivered a project that not only meets the needs of today but is built to endure for decades.
