Elevating Outdoor Spaces: The Impact of Accoya on a Garden Room Orangery

In 2024, a beautiful property in Oakham, Rutland, underwent an exceptional transformation with the addition of a bespoke wooden Garden Room Orangery.

The homeowners, located in the county of Leicestershire, desired a dedicated space for summer barbeques and entertaining guests. The project presented unique challenges, including the need to seamlessly integrate the new structure with the existing property while ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.

To meet the homeowners’ requirements, a design that blended traditional architectural elements with modern features was conceptualized by Midland Conservatories. The Garden Room spanned an impressive 15.5 meters in length, providing ample space for social gatherings.

A key feature of this structure was the large bi-folding doors, manufactured from Accoya wood. These doors were strategically installed along the front elevation, allowing the entire room to open up to the lush garden, creating an effortless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The choice of Accoya wood was instrumental in achieving both the aesthetic and functional goals of the project. Accoya is a high-performance wood that undergoes a proprietary acetylation process, which enhances its durability and dimensional stability. This makes it an ideal material for outdoor applications, where exposure to the elements is a concern.

Its superior performance is backed by a 50-year above-ground guarantee, making it a long-lasting investment for the homeowners. Additionally, Accoya is sourced from sustainably managed forests and carries the FSC® certification, aligning with the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

To ensure that the Garden Room harmonized with the existing property, Accoya sliding sash windows were installed, replicating the style of the original house. These windows not only enhanced the visual appeal but also maintained the property’s traditional charm

The Garden Room’s roof was another standout feature. Spanning over 11 meters in length, the roof lantern flooded the space with natural light, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere.

To support the structure, a steel A-frame was incorporated, providing both strength and stability. This frame was expertly clad in ornate timber moulding, ensuring that the modern steel elements were beautifully concealed, preserving the traditional aesthetic of the Garden Room.

The completion of the Garden Room Orangery exceeded the homeowners’ expectations. The integration of large Accoya bi-folding doors and the thoughtfully designed windows allowed the new structure to blend seamlessly with the existing property.

The space not only serves as a perfect venue for summer barbeques and entertaining but also as a year-round retreat that enhances the overall functionality and value of the home.

The use of Accoya wood ensured that the Garden Room would withstand the test of time, maintaining its beauty and performance for decades to come. The homeowners now enjoy a versatile, durable, and environmentally friendly space that complements their lifestyle and enhances the charm of their property.
