Accoya Innovation: Transforming Brighton’s Shelter Hall

In a remarkable feat of architectural restoration and modern engineering, the iconic Shelter Hall in Brighton has been revitalised, blending historic charm with contemporary design.

This landmark building, now a key attraction on Brighton’s historic seafront, showcases the delicate balance of old and new.

Central to this transformation are the signature Accoya windows and doors, expertly crafted by Gowercroft Joinery, which offer panoramic views of the Brighton coastline while enduring the harsh coastal environment.

Historical Background

Historical Background

Located at the junction of two conservation areas, Shelter Hall originally served as a refuge for bathers and locals in the late 19th century.

Over time, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually deemed structurally unsafe. In 2017, Brighton and Hove City Council launched an ambitious project to restore and expand the hall, preserving its historical significance while meeting modern standards of safety and functionality.

The project, led by R H Partnership Architects in collaboration with Edburton Contractors Ltd, involved the complete demolition of the original structure and the construction of a new, larger version that would pay homage to the original design.

Engineering Challenges

Engineering Challenges

The site required complex engineering solutions to stabilise the ground and prevent the collapse of the underlying chalk cliffs. Moreover, the design had to respect the historical architecture of Brighton’s seafront while incorporating modern materials and technologies.

Where possible, materials were sourced from within the UK to reduce the project’s carbon footprint and support the local economy. The goal was to create a functional, accessible, and sustainable building with a unique identity that would complement its historic surroundings and enrich the seafront experience.

One of the standout features of the new building is its signature timber windows and doors, designed to offer seamless panoramic views of the Brighton coastline.

Manufactured by Gowercroft Joinery, these elements were selected for their slim elegance, delicate aesthetics, and exceptional strength and durability.

They are built to withstand severe coastal weather conditions and the corrosive effects of sea spray, thereby minimising potential future maintenance costs. The slim profiles are crafted from robust Accoya®, which provides both durability and an elegant appearance that complements the traditional architecture of the seafront.

To ensure efficient passive background ventilation without increasing frame thickness, bespoke trickle ventilation is concealed within the profiles. The windows and doors are coated with a specially formulated protective finish, and the glazing, held with delicate beading, is both toughened and laminated.

Accoya wood was chosen not only for its resistance to the corrosive effects of sea spray and harsh coastal weather but also for its minimal maintenance requirements and refined aesthetic.

Final Outcome

Final Outcome

The restoration of Shelter Hall has transformed it into a vibrant cultural and social hub, offering a unique blend of historic charm and modern amenities.

The building is now home to flagship restaurants, live entertainment, and retail spaces, making it a key destination for both locals and visitors.

The careful attention to architectural detail and the use of high-quality, durable materials have ensured that Shelter Hall will continue to be a cherished part of Brighton’s seafront for generations to come.
