TRIED AND TESTED

A study with a Dutch window producer and a maintenance company shows that Accoya® wood windows are initially more expensive, but have a lower total cost than UPVC, aluminium, pine and hardwood windows over the lifetime of the home.
Coating test at Teknos – BM TRADA 7 year results
A weathering test was set up by Teknos (UK) Ltd who is an Accoya® wood system supplier. The coating supplier provides coatings for cladding, wooden doors and windows.
The test began in 2009 to obtain natural weathering performance data, end grain sealing and profile design impact of three different coated timber substrates, Accoya® wood, western red cedar and Siberian larch.
SCION OUTDOOR STAKE TEST
Durability testing is run for extended periods, to local standards at locations across the world including New Zealand. Accoya® is tested alongside CCA H4, Teak and western red cedar at the SCION graveyard test field in Rotorua. Stakes are inspected on 12 month intervals by the SCION staff and scored on a scale from 10 (perfect) to 0 (totally destroyed).
At the 10 year point only colour change has been noted for the Accoya® wood samples while all other wood types have either onset of decay or significant decay.
APPEARANCE AND WEATHERING
In its natural form, Accoya® wood is a cream/light straw colour. From a technical performance perspective, in respect of attributes such as durability and dimensional stability, there is no need to finish Accoya® wooden windows and doors. However, there is often a desire to spray-finish many Accoya® wood windows and doors with the trend breaking away from white windows and doors, and moving towards black and bold colour selections
Coatings and finishes
With Accoya® wood, its improved stability means coatings last up to two times longer, giving you a low maintenance solution for timber windows and doors.
Traditional exterior windows and doors, in oak or other hardwoods, need to be checked several times a year, to ensure there are no cracks in paintwork or varnish. Wear and tear in exterior coatings means that damp and moisture can creep in, which can see the onset of rot if not seen to straight away. The movement in oak, particularly, can cause cracks within the wood and coatings.
