Door Restoration Project
The Lake Park Town Hall was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style by South Florida architect Bruce Kitchell and built by Arnold Construction Company in 1927. The Town Hall originally served as the police and fire departments, town administration, library, and municipal courtroom. The Town Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Planes in 1981.
The restoration project for this building started on June 2021 and finished in September 2021. The following were restored using Accoya and Tricoya wood:
1 historic fanlight transom sash
3 non-historic wood doors
1 double wood door with fixed side panels and transom
From Rot to Recovery
The existing doors were built from Sapele around the year 2000 and were made to match the original doors, except for the double doors (pictured above). These double doors originally had large bi-folding doors, as this space served as the garage for the Town’s fire trucks. As part of the large restoration project that took place in 2000, this space was converted to the Council Chambers, therefore the Architect designed a new door assembly to better suit the new use.
The other doors had large amount of wood rot, due to the poor construction of the doors. The rails and stiles were butt jointed and secured with two dowels, and the bars and muntins were only coped and toe-nailed to the rails, stiles, and each other. These poor construction methods, paired with the instability of the Sapele led to the pain failing at the joints, and water saturating the wood fiber. Rot was inevitable.
SPS designed and manufactured new doors from solid Accoya, with Tricoya panels. All the joinery was mortise and tenon, glued with polyurethane glue. The doors were primed with Zinsser AllPrime Oil-Based primer, the interior was finished with Benjamin Moore Corotech Command, and the exterior was finished with Benjamin Moore Aura Low Lustre.
