Accoya Totem Displays for Tourism in the Canary Islands
The City Council of Agate, located in the Canary Islands, Spain, has installed 20 digital totems all over the 8 islands, serving as both smart weather stations for beach and waterfront visitors and cultural structures representing the Canary Islands. These totems, comprised of steel and Accoya wood, offer a unique blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Accoya wood was specifically chosen for the exterior of the totems due to its exceptional ability to withstand the harsh coastal conditions, including sun exposure and heavy rainfall, while maintaining durability and stability over time. This resilience ensures longevity without the concern of rot or insect damage, crucial factors in a dynamic coastal environment.
Accoya used to Enhance Cultural Design
The design of the wooden outer sections draws inspiration from aboriginal ceramic art pieces crafted by the indigenous people of the island. Embracing the geometric style reminiscent of the worship of the sun god “Magheq,” these patterns add a touch of cultural heritage to the structure, enhancing its significance to the community.
In addition to its performance benefits, Accoya wood aligns with the project’s sustainability goals. As a Cradle to Cradle certified material, it underscores the commitment to environmentally responsible practices. Furthermore, its non-toxic nature ensures minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem, making it an ideal choice for this project.
