Accoya stands the test of harsh and rapidly changing weather on Mt. Ruapehu

New Zealand’s first Accoya job in 2011 was sure to be a test for Accoya’s highly regarded durability and stability benefits.

Situated at Knoll Ridge, which is located at Whakapapa Ski Field on Mt. Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park in New Zealand, and which also happens to be on the side of a mountain on what is New Zealand’s largest active volcano, Accoya was used for posts and handrails.

Supplied by Timspec, an Accoya distributor, the handrails were constructed as part of the complete replacement of the Knoll Ridge chalet, in 2011. The designers liked the idea of the Accoya going grey and a grey oil was selected to give this look until it went all grey naturally.

Two years on the Accoya is still performing well. The durability and stability of the Accoya have proven to be a great benefit in rapidly changing weather on New Zealand’s mountains, with Mt. Ruapehu no exception. The laminated posts and handrails have no movement/splits or cracks from this extreme environment.

The images show the posts and rails are in excellent condition after three summers and two winters and high levels of UV.
