A Large-Scale Door Reimagined in Accoya Wood

Project Overview

Project Overview

This residential home redefines contemporary living with a calm, crafted environment that celebrates a connection to nature. Completed in March 2025 by Magri Williams Architects in collaboration with Bath Bespoke, the project combines low-energy performance with enduring design.

The home reinterprets the traditional pitched house through a contemporary lens, featuring a dual-pitched roof, monolithic brick facade, and oversized asymmetric windows. A large timber sliding door spanning the full width of the building creates a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces, bringing light and landscape into the home while complementing its clean, crafted aesthetic.

Why Accoya

Why Accoya

The project presented a significant challenge: a 10-metre-wide, 3.2-metre-tall sliding door within a bespoke frame—an ambitious scale that conventional timber could not achieve without compromise.

Accoya’s unrivalled dimensional stability and durability made this possible, allowing the joinery to span extraordinary widths while remaining precise, smooth, and fully functional. Beyond its performance, Accoya delivers a light, elegant finish that complements the warm tones of hardwoods used throughout the interior of the home.

These same qualities also enabled the creation of a bespoke glazed side door, four large casement windows, and a fixed window, each crafted to exacting standards and contributing to a cohesive, visually refined result.

Fabrication and Finish

Fabrication and Finish

The joinery was crafted using traditional techniques, demonstrating Accoya’s seamless integration into established craftsmanship practices. Its stability enabled larger spans and precise detailing, while reducing the need for excessive planing or reworking during manufacture.

All Accoya elements were factory coated, ensuring consistent colour, long-term protection, and a refined finish. The material’s versatility allowed finishes that complement the home’s extensive use of Douglas fir, creating a cohesive relationship between interior and exterior spaces.

Performance and Outcome

Performance and Outcome

This project demonstrates the tangible value of choosing Accoya when ambition and precision must work in harmony. Compared with alternative materials, Accoya proved more stable, easier to work with, and cost-effective at scale. The sliding and fixed elements operate smoothly, while the casement windows and side door offer long-term reliability with minimal maintenance.

The homeowner has praised the quality of the finish and the seamless operation of the large-scale joinery. For both the architect and the joinery manufacturer, the outcome reinforces Accoya’s role as a material of choice—one that offers stability, longevity, and genuine design freedom.

The result stands as a clear demonstration of how Accoya enables ambitious residential architecture, particularly where oversized doors and windows are central to the vision.
