Accoya for sports ground

Accoya for sports ground

North of Madrid in Torrelodones, Spain, is this multi-purpose sports ground. The pitch is frequently used for both football and rugby and has an on-site building that contains changing facilities, café, and events space.

The building façade alternates panels of exposed concrete, glass, and Accoya wood. The Accoya wood panels were profiled from rough boards 100×25mm and 150×63mm and installed vertically. The outdoor space allows for the café seating to be extended outside and here, shorter Accoya slats were used to create picket fence style railings. All Accoya slats were coated bright yellow, the chosen colour for the sports ground.

Accoya was also used internally for bench seating in the changing rooms. Accoya is ideal here as it’s resistance to water and humidity will ensure it stands the test of time despite the continuous moisture from the showers. These Accoya benches were installed uncoated.

The architect, Diaz Doncel Architects, specified Accoya for its resistance outdoors, aesthetics and sustainability. They wanted a natural wood material to contract against the concrete and glass used elsewhere. All Accoya wood was installed by local Accoya suppliers, Grupo Gamiz.
