Accoya cladding used for Ravelijn kiosk

Bergen op Zoom

Netherlands

The Ravelijn ‘Op den Zoom’ is a fort-island of the city of Bergen op Zoom in The Netherlands which was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century by Menno van Coehoorn, a famous fort builder. This is the only remaining Ravelijn still left in existence. The island sits just outside of the former center of the city. At the end of the 19th century the fortress lost its defensive function and nowadays the island-fort is mainly used for small public and private events.

Architects: RO&AD Architecten and design team: Ro Koster, Ad Kil, Martin van Overveld were tasked with making the kiosk a place where the public could use the rest room as well as a useful information point. In doing so, apart from the brick foundation, the kiosk is made entirely of Accoya.
