New and improved Accoya boardwalk

New and improved Accoya boardwalk

Located in the Mandurah area of Perth is the Lake Goegrup Nature Reserve. The reserve is part of the Peel Yalgorup wetland system which supports over 20,000 migratory and resident shorebirds each year. It is also an important habitat for the native plant, Samphire.

The local McGowan Government in WA has a recovery plan and $750,000 AUD worth of funding was utilised to replace the existing boardwalk in the nature reserve.

The boardwalk is 292 metres long and was re-designed to meet current mobility and accessibility standards. It also includes three viewing areas with benches and signage to describe the environmental and Aboriginal cultural values of the area.

To protect and enhance the area and all its inhabitants, modern building materials were chosen including Accoya wood for the deck boards. Accoya is non-toxic and will not leach any chemicals, making it suitable for a nature reserve. Additionally it is real wood and so in keeping with the natural surroundings but the modification process will ensure the life of the boardwalk is maximised. Despite the close contact to water, Accoya will stand the test of time with minimal movement and any uptake of water not impacting the performance of the wood. All Accoya was supplied by M&B Sales in Perth.

The new Accoya boardwalk opened for the public to enjoy in April 2022.
