Accoya decking specified for Auckland council stormwater project

The Auckland Council Stormwater Project – a major regeneration project.

Located in the La Rosa Gardens Reserve, the project restored approximately 180 metres of the Waitahurangi and Parahiku streams to a more natural profile. Urban development had resulted in the streams being directed through long sections of concrete pipes (culverting); this project has replaced the pipes with planted stream banks; a process known as daylighting.

The overall project included removal of 5000m3 of material, import and placement of 1000m3 of topsoil on stream embankments, placement of rock arming and wool mulch material, construction and installation of three pedestrian bridges, boardwalk and Accoya footpaths.

Accoya, specified by Boffa Miskell a leading New Zealand environmental planning and design consultancy company selected Accoya decking from Timspec, (Accoya distributors in New Zealand) for all the walkways in the reserve. A total of 25m3 which is approx 170 linear metres of boardwalk, was used and now complete, the project has transformed the area into a vibrant recreation space for Aucklanders.

Following the official opening in November 2013, the Accoya walkways around the reserve allow easy access for residents to enjoy a rich natural haven and will serve as a pedestrian route between the surrounding streets and the Godley Road shopping precinct.

Accoya wood has been used in the redevelopment of some 40 year old bus shelters owned by Auckland Transport. The project was completed in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The new over bridge shelters are a combination of glass, graphics, Accoya wood and steel, resulting in an “urban lounge” design, as one local blogger described it, with an eclectic mix that pays homage to the changing community around it. The inverted-L-shaped Accoya wood structures give an open, airy and modern feel to help the user feel comfortable and have a fantastic vista of the surrounding areas.

Accoya was fit for the job, thanks to its durability, stability and sustainability qualities, and now provides a long lasting solution to withstand the footflow of the public. Also, the outstanding environmental credentials of Accoya confirmed to us that this product was not only the right choice, but the responsible choice.”
