A spectacular view over the dutch dunes

The Netherlands

With spectacular views over the Dutch dunes, the residents of this seaside house can enjoy the beautiful natural green landscape that hides behind the dunes every day.

The design is reminiscent of a cabin-like holiday home, and using the other houses located in the area as their source of inspiration, the design has taken shape. Dutch design studio Unknown Architects has chosen to divide the house into three different levels. First a concrete base, followed by a simple structure of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and steel, and finally a steep, asymmetrical pitched roof which Accoya wood was specified.

By using natural Accoya wood, the boards will weather over time and develop a beautiful platinum colour that will blend perfectly into the dune landscape. In addition, the skylight ceiling offers a view from a higher point looking back over the island and the other cottages, when the residents look through it from the mezzanine located under the dome of the roof.

What makes the house special is the lower floor, which nestles itself in the dunes and blends in seamlessly with the landscape. This way, the design studio was able to complement the lower floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom, storage space and technical room. But in addition to this lower floor, a sheltered terrace area has also been created for an ultimate moment of relaxation and the panoramic window on the ground floor gives the residents the ultimate feeling of standing in the dunes themselves.
