Chicago upside-down house uses Accoya wood for exterior cladding

The Ardmore House is a single-family home located on a residential street in Chicago. It was designed and built for personal use by Alison Von Glinow and Lap Chi Kwong of Kwong Von Glinow. This unique layout flips the traditional floor plan, arraying bedrooms on the first floor and living spaces on the second. The structure of the house is relatively simple, built using standard materials. For the exterior, the base is concrete while the upper levels use an Accoya wood façade system in two different shades – grey and black.  The façade mirrors the internal arrangement of the two floors.

It recently received the Honor Award for the 2021 Chicago Small Project Awards by AIA Chicago. It was also featured as the House of the Month in the January 2021 issue of Architectural Record.
