Joensuu Market Square is the official trade market place of the city, where there is activity all year round. Over the past couple of years, the market square underwent a major renovation, costing 4 million Euros and was completed in November 2018.
The market was designed to last, “at least 100 years” stated a city engineer and part of the renovation included a wooden bench. Accoya was the chosen material because of its low maintenance requirements and resistance to the weather, perfect for a public bench in a country with varying weather conditions.
Several different contractors were involved in the project, but Helsinki based joiners, Novenberg, built and supplied the Accoya bench. The Accoya was coated to a dark brown, which was ideal as the contractor knew that just like other woods Accoya will weather and turn grey over time if left natural.
