The EPA recommendations are in place to assist federal purchasers identify and procure environmentally sustainable products and services. The recommendations, which the EPA has been able to confirm an expert certification body that are accredited and/or meets Section III of EPA’s Guidelines, give preference to multi-attribute standards and ecolabels.

“70% of Cradle to Cradle Certified products fall under the built environment and furnishing categories. We believe the new EPA recommendations of Cradle to Cradle Certified as a preferred standard for greener purchasing within those product categories stands to create additional competitive advantage for those manufacturers should they seek to provide their products to federal agencies,” said Lewis Perkins, president of Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

Accoya wood, awarded the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold level designation since 2010, is the only durable wood product to receive the certification. “We are very proud to be the only durable wood product to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold,” said Laura Keily, head of marketing at Accsys Technologies. “The EPA’s recognition of Cradle to Cradle only strengthens the credibility of the ecolabel and the early adoption of the process by Accsys Technologies’ and other manufacturers.”

Accoya wood is manufactured using Accsys Technologies’ proprietary acetylation process to create the nontoxic high performance wood product. The modification process chemically alters the wood’s free hydroxyls into stable acetyl groups. Acetyl groups are naturally present in all wood species, which means that nothing toxic is added. The altered cell structure of the wood makes it an unrecognizable food source for insects and prevents fungal decay.

Accoya wood boasts a 50-year above ground and 25-year below ground warranty and swelling and shrinkage are reduced by 75 percent or more. The material is sourced from FSC®-certified forests and is not only Cradle to Cradle Gold certified, but also holds a healthy materials standard for Google’s Portico.
