Accoya selected for Wood City apartment façade in Helsinki

06 Dec 16

Accoya, the world leading modified wood, has been specified to clad a series of new residential blocks within Helsinki’s Wood City.

Accoya will be used to clad an eight floor high residential high rise directly facing the Gulf of Finland. Located in the trendy Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki, the build will provide 98 new homes. The project is a joint venture developed by Stora Enso Wood Products, Helsinki City Apartments Limited, Novenberg Limited and SRV Group Plc.

Accoya was specified for the apartment complex by Finnish wood distributors Novenberg, who recommended the product for its impeccable durability, LEED certification and its environmental friendliness. Accoya will be treated using Rubio Monocoat to ensure a even weathering process.

Born out of over 80 years of research and development, Accoya offers outstanding durability, even when used under water and within the ground. Made from FSC® certified wood from legal, manageable and sustainable forests, Accoya is manufactured using a process which creates one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market today.

Karl Lindström, Accoya sales manager in the Nordic region, commented: “Once completed, Wood City will truly be one of the most striking architectural achievements anywhere in the world. The architects have tapped in to an increasing trend across Europe to build using traditional materials such as wood. By using Accoya, the apartment block will look visually striking when seen from the water and Accoya will also enable low maintenance costs. Accoya really is the natural choice for Wood City, and to see it being commissioned for a project of this scale and vision is testament to the quality of our product.

The construction of Wood City began in spring this year and is expected to be completed by 2019. Alongside the new apartments, a hotel and eight storey office block are also set to be constructed.

Petteri Huomo at Novenberg said: “Because Accoya is extremely durable and able to cope with extreme temperatures and weather exposure, it was a natural choice for the new apartment blocks, which face directly onto the Gulf of Finland. Not only will the finished homes look visually striking on the coast of the city, they’ll also age extremely well thanks to the acetylation process the wood has undergone.

Made from FSC® certified wood from legal, manageable and sustainable forests, Accoya is an attractive wood product which is perfect for a variety of uses from windows and doors to external cladding, structural projects and decking.
