In May 2008, Accoya® was showcased in a new sustainable home that was built live on UK television by renowned Grand Designs presenter, Kevin McCloud.
Two doors and eight windows for the new house were constructed from Accoya® wood ahead of the Grand Designs Live show in London, using around 1.5 m3 of Accoya®.
Grand Designs Live approached Westgate Joinery to manufacture the windows and doors following recommendations from the project’s RIBA award-winning architect, Duncan Baker Brown, who was impressed with Accoya's® outstanding durability and performance credentials.
The challenge was to build a sustainable house in a week, using traditional materials and techniques alongside cutting-edge 21st Century technology. At the end of the event the house was dismantled and re-erected for permanent display at the UK’s Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) Innovation Park at Watford.
